For many people in Rowan County and the surrounding Eastern Kentucky hills, dropped calls and spotty cell service are a daily frustration. That could be changing soon. AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announced a collaboration this week aimed at reducing dead zones across the country, with a focus on rural and underserved areas.

The plan relies heavily on satellite technology, allowing cellphones to connect directly to satellites rather than relying solely on traditional cell towers. This could bring more consistent coverage to areas where service has historically been unreliable.

The companies are also developing systems to maintain service during emergencies, ensuring residents and travelers can stay connected when it matters most.

While the partnership is still pending regulatory approval, this effort represents a potential boost for Eastern Kentucky communities, where cell service has often been unpredictable for both residents and visitors.
