Emergency crews recovered the body of an unidentified male from the Ohio River Monday afternoon near Scott Park along Front Street in Vanceburg.

According to officials, Lewis County E-911 received a call at approximately 4:37 p.m. reporting a body in the water near the park.

Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Vanceburg Police Department, Lewis County Emergency Management, the Lewis County Coroner’s Office, and the Vanceburg Fire Department.

Upon arrival, responders located the body and secured the area. The recovery was carried out under the direction of Lewis County Coroner Tony Gaydos.

At this time, the identity of the individual has not been confirmed. Authorities are working with surrounding jurisdictions, as well as agencies upriver, in an effort to determine who the individual is and how he ended up in the water.

The body has been transported to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort for further examination.

Lewis County Emergency Management Director Dennis Brown said the focus remains on identifying the individual and notifying next of kin.

“Our priority right now is identifying this individual and notifying their family,” Brown said. “We know someone, somewhere, is worried about a loved one. We ask anyone who may have information to please contact Lewis County Dispatch.”

The incident remains under investigation. No additional details have been released at this time.
