A local family is turning tragedy into advocacy after a brutal assault on a 14-year-old autistic boy left him hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
According to information shared publicly by Casey Lynn Hale and Jamie Delong Seagraves, the teen was attacked in August by an adult family acquaintance and reportedly suffered a traumatic brain injury along with multiple facial fractures. The teenager spent time in the ICU fighting for his life and now continues to battle the emotional and physical aftermath of the attack, including severe PTSD.
In response, the family has launched an effort called the “Austin Cordle Child Protection Act,” a proposed initiative aimed at creating a registry for individuals convicted of violent crimes against children. The family says the goal is to provide parents and communities with greater awareness and protection for vulnerable children, particularly those with disabilities.
The petition states that children with disabilities are statistically more likely to become victims of violence and argues that stronger preventative measures are needed to help protect them. The proposal also calls for increased public awareness and community involvement in child protection efforts.
Alongside the petition drive, supporters are organizing awareness campaigns and fundraising efforts to help spread the message. Donations of money, blank t-shirts, vinyl materials, and printed flyers are currently being accepted to support the initiative.
Organizers say businesses or individuals who contribute may be recognized on promotional materials and future campaign platforms as the movement continues to grow.
The family has also expressed hopes of establishing future “Memory Days” events designed to honor victims, raise awareness, and encourage public support for child safety legislation.
