A small church in Olive Hill is asking the community for help as it works to complete a major roof replacement project on a building that holds both spiritual and historical significance for the area.
According to Pastor Jason Lewis, New Beginnings West Ministry has already raised nearly $12,000 over the past six to eight months toward the effort. The church says it is now approximately $8,000 away from reaching its goal — meaning supporters have already helped the congregation move more than halfway toward completing the project.
The church building, located at 12945 U.S. 60 in Olive Hill, has reportedly experienced ongoing roof leaks, and church members say temporary repairs are no longer enough to stop the deterioration. Leaders say the roof has reached the point where a full replacement is necessary before additional damage occurs.
Pastor Lewis thanked supporters for their generosity and encouragement throughout the fundraising effort, saying the church hopes the community can help “get them over the finish line” before winter weather arrives later this year.
In addition to serving as the current home of New Beginnings West Ministry, the structure itself also carries decades of local history. Over the years, the building housed several funeral homes, including Olive Hill Funeral Home, Oney-Blankenship Funeral Home, Oney Funeral Home, and later Carter County Funeral Home & Services.
Morehead Minute publisher Joe Clark also has personal ties to the building, having worked there during its years as both Oney Funeral Home and later Carter County Funeral Home & Services.
After the funeral home operations closed, the property reportedly served a few other purposes before eventually sitting vacant for several years and falling into a state of deterioration prior to becoming the church it is today.
Church leaders say they believe the building still has an important purpose in the community and are hoping supporters will help preserve it for future generations.
