MOREHEAD, Ky. — A correctional officer at the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex (EKCC) has been terminated following an investigation into allegations of attempting to smuggle illegal narcotics into the prison.

According to the Kentucky State Police, 60‑year‑old Joe Cress faces multiple charges, including promoting contraband (first degree), trafficking a controlled substance (second degree), and official misconduct (first degree).

Officials say the investigation began after prison staff reportedly intercepted the officer during a contraband screening. The Department of Corrections confirmed that Cress was fired on May 22, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to safety within the facility.

“The Department remains committed to protecting both inmates and correctional employees by continually evaluating and strengthening contraband prevention efforts,” a DOC spokesperson said.

The case remains under investigation by Kentucky State Police. Further details will be released as they become available.
