Eastern Kentucky, including Morehead, is under an Extreme Heat Warning until 8:00 p.m. Friday, July 3, 2026. Residents are urged to take precautions.
Forecasters warn that dangerously hot conditions will continue through the remainder of the week, with afternoon heat index values expected to reach or exceed 105 degrees. Overnight temperatures are also expected to remain unusually warm, providing little relief from the prolonged stretch of heat.
The warning includes portions of east-central, northeast, south-central, and southeast Kentucky, where the combination of high temperatures and humidity is expected to create hazardous conditions.
Health officials caution that prolonged exposure to the heat can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The most oppressive conditions are expected on Thursday, making it especially important for residents to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day.
Officials recommend drinking plenty of water, staying in air-conditioned buildings whenever possible, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, and checking on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to the heat.
Motorists are also reminded never to leave children or pets unattended in a vehicle, even for a short period. Temperatures inside a parked vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes.
The extended period of hot and humid weather is expected to continue through at least Friday evening before conditions begin to improve. Residents are encouraged to monitor the latest forecasts and use caution while spending time outdoors.
