GRAYSON, Ky. — As the search continues for missing boater Marly Kinney at Grayson Lake, a member of her family is asking the public to support search efforts by allowing trained responders to do their work.
In a public statement, Marly's sibling, Willow VanHoose, said the family has received numerous messages from people wanting to help search by walking trails, boating on the lake, or using drones. While expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support, the family said they have been advised by first responders, law enforcement, and search-and-rescue personnel that additional volunteer searchers could unintentionally hinder the ongoing operation.
According to the statement, the lake and surrounding recreation areas remain open to the public. However, officials have advised that large numbers of people searching independently could disturb areas that have not yet been thoroughly examined. If search teams encounter people unexpectedly in the woods, they may believe a sighting has been made and divert valuable personnel and resources away from other areas.
The family also noted that if someone searching on their own becomes injured, emergency responders would have to redirect resources to assist them, potentially delaying the search for Marly.
The statement also emphasized that privately operated drones and other search technology should not be used. Family members said authorities have advised that unauthorized drones force official search drones to land immediately due to safety and legal concerns, interrupting aerial search operations.
The family encouraged those wishing to help to continue keeping Marly and everyone involved in the search in their thoughts while allowing the coordinated search effort to proceed without interference.
