OLIVE HILL, Ky. — James Arnold "Jim" Short, a longtime educator, businessman, and former mayor of Olive Hill, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at his home surrounded by family. He was 76.
A lifelong resident of Olive Hill, Short dedicated much of his life to serving the community he called home. After graduating from Olive Hill High School in 1967, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Morehead State University in 1972 before later completing his master's degree.
Returning to Olive Hill after college, Short began a career in education that spanned more than a quarter century. From 1973 until his retirement in 1999, he taught shop and science in the Carter County School System, helping generations of students develop practical skills, confidence, and a strong work ethic. Even after retiring from the classroom, those who knew him said he never stopped teaching, always willing to share his knowledge and encourage others to learn.
Beyond education, Short became deeply involved in civic life. He served as Mayor of Olive Hill for nine years, leading the city through what his family described as often challenging political times. Despite those challenges, he remained committed to serving the community and its residents, a responsibility he considered an honor.
His contributions also extended into the local business community. Throughout his career, Short owned and operated several businesses in Olive Hill, including Contractor Supply and Depot Video. He also worked alongside his father in the family's hardware store, where they built lasting relationships with customers over the years.
Outside of public service and business, Short was a gifted musician who played several stringed instruments, including the guitar, banjo, and mandolin. He enjoyed performing bluegrass and gospel music and sharing those talents with friends, family, and his church community.
Those closest to him said his Christian faith remained the foundation of his life, shaping his approach to public service, education, and his relationships with others.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 6, at Duvall & Moore Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Olive Hill. Visitation is scheduled for Sunday from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m., and again Monday morning beginning at 9 a.m. until the time of service.
