A new federal initiative is aiming to make Artificial Intelligence less intimidating — and it all happens through simple text messages.

The U.S. Department of Labor recently launched its free “Make America AI-Ready” program, a seven-day introductory course delivered entirely through SMS messaging.

After enrolling, participants receive short daily lessons designed to take around 10 minutes per day. The course appears to focus heavily on explaining A.I. in plain English for beginners who may have little or no technical background.

The Morehead Minute recently enrolled in the program to see how it works.

Lesson One Focuses on Everyday Uses of A.I.

The first lesson explains that many people already use A.I. daily without realizing it.

Examples mentioned in the course include:

  • Google Maps helping drivers avoid traffic

  • Netflix recommending shows and movies

  • Smartphones predicting text while typing

The course describes A.I. as technology that analyzes large amounts of data, recognizes patterns, and makes predictions.

It also introduces participants to “Generative AI,” the rapidly growing branch of artificial intelligence behind tools such as:

  • OpenAI’s ChatGPT

  • Google Gemini

  • Anthropic Claude

  • xAI Grok

According to the lesson, the course will eventually teach users how to:

  • Give A.I. clear instructions (“prompting”)

  • Evaluate A.I. responses

  • Decide when A.I. is useful and when human judgment is still better

The lessons are conversational in tone and even include humor, memes, and interactive questions designed to keep users engaged.

Designed for Everyday Americans

One of the most interesting aspects of the program is its simplicity.

Instead of requiring a computer class, expensive software, or even an app download, everything is handled through ordinary text messaging. That could make the course especially useful for rural communities, older adults, or people who may not feel comfortable with traditional online learning platforms.

The program states that phone numbers are used only for delivering the course and will not be sold to third parties for marketing purposes.

Why This Matters

Artificial Intelligence is increasingly becoming part of modern workplaces, customer service, education, marketing, healthcare, and small business operations.

While many people still feel uncertain about the technology, programs like this appear designed to help bridge the gap between advanced technology and everyday users.

For Eastern Kentucky residents looking to better understand the rapidly changing digital world, this may be one of the easiest entry points currently available.
