Morehead State University student-athlete John Northcutt, who also serves the Rowan County community as Coroner, Assistant Fire Chief, and funeral director, has been honored through the Ohio Valley Conference’s Hoops For Heroes program during this year’s OVC Basketball Championships.

Northcutt was recognized both at the conference tournament and again during a Morehead State student-athlete banquet, representing the university and the community for his continued service and dedication.

The Hoops For Heroes initiative, led by the Ohio Valley Conference, highlights veterans and first responders from OVC communities who have committed their lives to serving others. In recent years, the program has expanded its recognition to include first responders, placing individuals like Northcutt in the spotlight for their contributions both on and off the court.

In reflecting on the honor, Northcutt emphasized that the experience went beyond recognition. He noted the significance of being surrounded by fellow student-athletes from across the conference, all sharing a common commitment to discipline, hard work, and pride in their respective programs.

Northcutt also expressed deep appreciation for the Rowan County and Morehead communities, stating that serving the area has been a source of pride and purpose. He credited the sense of community and connection—both in the stands and behind the scenes—as a meaningful part of his experience at Morehead State.

The recognition underscores not only Northcutt’s role as a student-athlete, but also his impact as a public servant in multiple capacities across the region.

Morehead State Athletics and the Ohio Valley Conference were both acknowledged for their role in honoring individuals who exemplify service, leadership, and community commitment.
