BATH COUNTY, Ky. — Motorists traveling through Bath County should prepare for extended traffic impacts as a major construction project gets underway on Interstate 64 beginning Thursday, July 9.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) Highway District Nine, Walker Construction will close the fast lane in both the eastbound and westbound lanes of I-64 from mile markers 123.0 to 129.0. The lane closures are expected to remain in place for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to continue until approximately September 1, 2026.

The work includes the remaining mainline paving and shoulder improvements, as well as concrete work associated with the KY 211 overpass. Construction crews will generally work daily from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.

In addition to the paving project, crews will install temporary concrete barrier walls at mile marker 129.0 on the eastbound side of I-64 beginning July 9. Those barriers are needed for restoration work on the eastbound Licking River bridge, with that portion of the project expected to continue until approximately August 7, 2026. Work hours for the bridge project will also be 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

KYTC said two nighttime bridge deck pours are planned later in the project. Dates for those operations will be announced separately.

Wide Load Detour

While the temporary concrete barriers are in place on the Licking River Bridge, eastbound wide-load traffic will be required to follow a detour:

  • Exit I-64 at US 60/Owingsville (Exit 123).

  • Turn east (right) onto US 60.

  • Continue to the US 60/KY 801 intersection.

  • Turn north (left) onto KY 801.

  • Follow KY 801 to the I-64 eastbound on-ramp.

Motorists are encouraged to use caution in the work zone, watch for changing traffic patterns, reduce speeds, and allow additional travel time while construction is underway.
