MAYSVILLE, Ky. — Two owners of a Maysville monument company have been arrested following an investigation into complaints that customers paid for headstones and monuments that were allegedly never delivered.

According to Maysville police, concerns about the business first surfaced earlier this year after customers began reporting that they had purchased memorial products but had not received them.

Police Chief Patrick Boggs said investigators initially worked with the business owners in an effort to help resolve customer complaints and ensure products were delivered. However, authorities say communication eventually ceased, prompting a deeper investigation into the matter.

The business owners, identified by police as Christopher Smoot and Jonathan Tranbarger of J&S Monuments, have been charged with theft by failure to make required disposition of property. Authorities indicated that many of the reported cases could rise to the felony level based on the amounts involved.

Both men were taken into custody this week. Police say one of the individuals has since posted bond, while additional warrants may still be pending.

The investigation has drawn attention from families who say they were left waiting for memorial markers intended to honor deceased loved ones.

One family told reporters they purchased a headstone last year but never received the product. The family expressed frustration over the lack of communication and said the situation was especially difficult because it involved memorializing a loved one during a period of grief.

Police have not released the total number of complaints received, but officials indicated the investigation remains active. Anyone who believes they may have been affected is encouraged to contact the Maysville Police Department.

The case highlights the importance of researching businesses, maintaining copies of contracts and receipts, and documenting communications when purchasing high-cost memorial products or other custom-made items.

Authorities have not announced any convictions, and the charges remain allegations until proven in court.
