VANCEBURG, Ky. — More than 28 years after he vanished while camping along the Ohio River, the disappearance of Lloyd M. McKinney remains one of northeastern Kentucky's most haunting unsolved cases.
According to information provided by the Kentucky State Police, McKinney was last seen on April 10, 1998, while camping near Salt Lick Creek and the Ohio River in Vanceburg. He was reportedly with Vernon Richmond at the time and has never been heard from again.
McKinney was 29 years old when he disappeared. He was described as 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds, with black hair, brown eyes, and may have been wearing a mustache.
The case took a significant turn the following year. In 1999, Richmond pleaded guilty to reckless homicide and tampering with physical evidence in connection with McKinney's disappearance. Investigators said Richmond claimed he buried McKinney's body in a shallow creek bed.
Despite extensive efforts, McKinney's remains have never been recovered. Authorities located several items of his clothing, but investigators believe his body may have eventually drifted into the Ohio River.
For McKinney's family, the search for answers continues. Every passing year serves as another reminder that many missing person cases remain unresolved, leaving loved ones without the closure they desperately seek.
