MOREHEAD, Ky. — What began as an unusually vivid early-morning dream has become a 363-page supernatural thriller for Morehead author and The Morehead Minute publisher Joe Clark.
Clark's newly published novel, Dampster Hollow, takes readers deep into the Appalachian hills of eastern Kentucky, where an isolated house, a weathered gate, and a little white country church conceal a mystery spanning more than a century.
The story begins with an unexplained sound—a deep, booming male laugh echoing through the home of the fictional Whitlock family.
Soon, objects begin moving without explanation, doors open on their own, and two frightened brothers flee the house, convinced that something terrifying is watching them.
But the apparent haunting is only the beginning.
As the mystery unfolds, a local man discovers connections to a disappearance in 1911, a congregation's long-buried secret, and a supernatural presence that may be far older than anyone realizes.
A Dream That Refused to Be Forgotten
According to Clark, the inspiration for the novel came from a dream so detailed that he remembered much of it after awakening.
"I've had some unusual dreams over the years, but this one was different," Clark said. "It had an actual storyline, characters, a setting, and even what appeared to be the cover of a book. When I woke up, I knew there was a story there worth exploring."
In the dream, Clark encountered an online article describing a supposedly haunted house along a rural road called Dampster Hollow.
The article described reports of a mysterious male laugh coming from inside the residence.
Later in the dream, Clark witnessed two terrified brothers running from the house after experiencing unexplained activity.
But another detail particularly captured his attention.
Just downhill from the house stood a small white church.
"I remember seeing the back of that church in the dream," Clark explained. "Only part of the building was visible. As I started developing the story, I began thinking about what it might mean for a church to literally turn its back on a community. That became one of the central themes of the novel."
Appalachian Setting, Supernatural Mystery
Although Dampster Hollow is entirely fictional, its atmosphere draws heavily upon the landscapes and traditions of eastern Kentucky.
The story combines elements of Appalachian Gothic fiction, haunted-house horror, historical mystery, and supernatural suspense.
Clark said the region's rural roads, isolated homes, wooded hillsides, and generations of storytelling provide a natural setting for this type of fiction.
"Appalachia has a tremendous storytelling tradition," Clark said. "There are stories about mysterious places, strange experiences, and events that people have passed down for generations. Whether someone believes in ghosts or not, those stories are part of the cultural landscape."
The novel also explores themes beyond the supernatural.
At its heart, Dampster Hollow examines fear, family loyalty, sacrifice, and the consequences of remaining silent when others need help.
"The haunting is what draws you into the story," Clark said. "But there's a deeper message about what happens when people turn their backs on others. I wanted that to be just as important as the mystery itself."
A New Addition to Clark's Growing Collection of Books
Clark is an author, true crime historian, ordained minister, and licensed funeral director and embalmer whose published works explore subjects ranging from historical crimes and unexplained events to religion, Appalachian history, and human behavior.
While much of his writing focuses on nonfiction, Dampster Hollow gives Clark an opportunity to explore those interests through supernatural fiction.
The completed novel spans 363 pages and is intended for adult readers who enjoy atmospheric ghost stories, paranormal mysteries, and suspenseful fiction.
