MOREHEAD, Ky. — Morehead State University’s TRIO Talent Search Programs have been awarded two federal grants totaling $1.045 million annually, securing more than $5.2 million in funding over the next five years.
The funding follows what program officials described as a highly competitive national grant process and will allow MSU’s Talent Search program to continue and expand services for students throughout Eastern Kentucky.
Talent Search has operated at Morehead State since 1968, working primarily with students from historically underserved communities, including those from economically disadvantaged families and students who would be the first generation in their families to attend college.
According to the program, the new grants will provide funding totaling approximately $5.225 million over five years.
Program expanding its reach
In addition to continuing its existing work, MSU Talent Search says the new funding will allow the program to expand.
Plans include increased annual funding, additional schools joining the program’s service area, new staff positions and expanded opportunities for participating students.
Talent Search provides services designed to help students prepare for education and life after high school. Those services include college preparation, career readiness, academic support, financial literacy, mentoring and hands-on educational experiences.
The program says its goal is to give students the knowledge, skills and confidence necessary to successfully make the transition from high school to college, career training or other opportunities.
Nearly six decades in Eastern Kentucky
The latest funding ensures that a program that has been part of Morehead State University and the Eastern Kentucky educational landscape for nearly six decades will continue through at least the next five-year grant cycle.
Program officials credited partnerships among Morehead State University, participating schools, community organizations, TRIO staff members and students and their families for helping sustain the program.
“Since 1968, TRIO Talent Search has been opening doors,” the program said in announcing the grants. “For the next five years, we’re ready to open even more.”
