MOREHEAD, Ky. — A new resource designed to improve independence and quality of life for individuals with disabilities officially opened its doors in Morehead on Wednesday.

According to State Representative Richard White, the Appalachian Center for Assistive Technology (ACAT) celebrated its grand opening, marking the beginning of a new chapter in providing assistive technology services to residents across eastern Kentucky.

The center, which is affiliated with UK St. Claire, is part of Kentucky's statewide Kentucky Assistive Technology Service (KATS) Network, a program that helps individuals of all ages obtain technology and equipment that promotes greater independence in everyday life.

Assistive technology includes a wide range of products designed to help people overcome physical, developmental, or cognitive challenges. These can range from wheelchairs, walkers, and communication devices to adaptive computer equipment, daily living aids, and specialized devices that allow individuals to live, work, learn, and participate more fully in their communities.

In addition to providing information and demonstrations of assistive technology, the Appalachian Center offers equipment consultations, short-term device loans, educational opportunities, and assistance in identifying technology that best fits an individual's needs. The center also participates in programs that refurbish and redistribute donated durable medical equipment, helping make costly devices more affordable and accessible for Kentucky families.

Another unique aspect of the program is its support for adaptive technology projects, including modifying toys and other devices so children and adults with disabilities can use them more easily.

The opening of the Appalachian Center for Assistive Technology represents another expansion of healthcare and community resources available in the Morehead area, while strengthening access to services for residents throughout the Appalachian region.

Residents interested in learning more about the center and the services it provides are encouraged to contact the Appalachian Center for Assistive Technology or UK St. Claire for additional information.
