The Rowan County Sheriff's Office has added a new deputy to its ranks, and local students will soon be seeing him on campus.

Deputy Steven Cranston was officially sworn in by District Judge Willie Roberts and will serve as the School Resource Officer (SRO) at Rowan County Middle School, according to an announcement from the Sheriff's Office.

Cranston joins the department after previously serving as a School Resource Officer in Columbiana, Alabama. His experience working with students and school staff is expected to help him transition smoothly into his new role in Rowan County.

Cranston and his wife, Chaney, recently relocated to the Morehead area. In addition to his law enforcement duties, Cranston is serving as pastor of Rodburn Church of God in Morehead. The couple has two children.

School Resource Officers play an important role in local schools by helping maintain campus safety, building positive relationships with students, and serving as a bridge between law enforcement and the community.

The Rowan County Sheriff's Office encouraged residents to welcome Cranston and his family to the area if they see them around town.

"The Morehead Minute welcomes Deputy Cranston and his family to Rowan County and wishes him success in his new role serving local students and the community."
