Morehead, KY – May 1, 2026 – For 50 years, Northcutt & Son Home For Funerals has been a pillar in the Morehead community, offering dignified funeral services with a personal touch. Established in 1976 by John D. “Denny” Northcutt, the funeral home has been family-owned and operated, continuing to provide families in the region with excellent service for five decades.
The foundation of Northcutt & Son began when Denny Northcutt, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, decided to establish the business with a deep desire to serve others the way he would want to be served. The Northcutt family has since remained dedicated to maintaining a high level of personalized care, with Denny’s son, John Palmer Northcutt, joining the family business as a licensed embalmer and funeral director in 1984. The legacy continues with Helen Arnett Northcutt, Denny's wife, who became a licensed funeral director in 1984 after retiring as a Morehead State University professor.
A Home-Like Atmosphere for Families
The funeral home was designed from the very start with a home-like atmosphere in mind. As one of the first funeral homes in Eastern Kentucky specifically built for funeral services, it offers a one-story layout with easy access throughout the building, spacious visitation rooms, and a church-like chapel that is still appreciated by families today. Renovations over the years have ensured that the building continues to provide both functionality and aesthetic appeal.
Denny recalls, “From the time I served my apprenticeship until I built our facility, nearly all funeral homes in this area operated out of a private home that had been converted into a funeral home. My goal was to provide excellent service in a building with a home-like atmosphere designed specifically for a funeral home.”
Personal Touch and Community Involvement
The Northcutt family’s commitment to providing personal and compassionate service goes beyond the funeral home. The family has been deeply involved in local organizations, including the Morehead Volunteer Fire Department, the Rotary Club of Morehead, and the Rowan County Public Library Board of Trustees. Denny’s past service includes two terms on the State Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, while John has also served as Rowan County Coroner and on the KY Mass Fatality Team. Their active participation in the community highlights their dedication not only to the families they serve but also to the broader Morehead area.
Honoring the Past and Preserving Memories
Throughout the years, Northcutt & Son has accumulated cherished mementos that reflect the rich diversity of the region. Among the treasures displayed in the funeral home are an iron dog paperweight, a Purple Heart, and an antique memorial folder for an infant that survived the 1920s flood, representing the home’s deep ties to the community and its history.
Looking Ahead: A Continuing Legacy of Service
Now in its 50th year, Northcutt & Son remains committed to its original mission: serving every family as they would like to be served. John and Helen, alongside the next generation of Northcutt family members, continue to ensure that families are supported during their most difficult times, providing exceptional service before, during, and after the funeral.
In the words of Denny, “Serving others as we would like to be served” remains the cornerstone of our family’s business, and it continues to drive us each and every day.
