MOREHEAD, Ky. — On Saturday morning, more than one hundred former students, teachers, staff members, and community residents returned to the halls of the former Rowan County High School and Rowan County Middle School for what was billed as a final public walk-through before the building begins its next chapter.
For many, the event was far more than a tour of an old school building. It was a chance to revisit decades of memories made inside the classrooms, hallways, gymnasiums, and cafeterias that helped shape generations of Rowan Countians.
Throughout the morning, former classmates reunited, old stories were exchanged, and visitors paused to take photographs and reflect on the role the school played in their lives. Many pointed out former classrooms, recalled favorite teachers, and shared memories of school events, athletic competitions, and friendships that began within the building's walls.
The open house, organized by the Rowan County School District, gave the public what may have been their final opportunity to walk through the historic facility before changes are made to the property.
What Happens Next?
While the walk-through provided closure for many residents, it also highlighted a question that continues to circulate throughout the community:
What exactly will become of the old school building?
Since the property was acquired by UK St. Claire, speculation has been widespread. Some community members believe the structure will eventually be demolished. Others believe it will be renovated and repurposed for healthcare, education, administrative, or community-related uses.
Seeking clarification, The Morehead Minute contacted UK St. Claire for comment.
In a statement provided by Crystal Staley, Director of Community Communications for UK HealthCare Corporate Communications, the organization indicated that no final decision has yet been made regarding the building's future.
"Consistent with our mission to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve, UK St. Claire acquired the property to support long-term campus planning. Specific plans for the property have not been finalized. The acquisition was approved by both the Claire Blue Health Board of Governors and the University of Kentucky Board of Trustees."
The statement appears to put to rest at least one rumor currently circulating in the community: that a final decision has already been made regarding demolition or repurposing. According to UK St. Claire, no specific plans have been finalized at this time.
A Building Full of Memories
Regardless of what ultimately happens to the property, Saturday's event underscored the emotional connection many Rowan County residents still have to the building.
For decades, the school served as an educational home to thousands of students. Alumni from multiple generations walked the halls one final time, often stopping to share stories with friends and family members who attended years apart but experienced many of the same traditions.
As visitors slowly filtered out of the building Saturday afternoon, there was a sense that while the structure's future remains uncertain, its place in Rowan County history is secure.
Whether the facility is eventually renovated, repurposed, or replaced, the memories created inside those walls will continue to live on through the generations of students, teachers, and staff who passed through its doors.
For now, the future of the former Rowan County High School and Rowan County Middle School remains unwritten — but one thing became clear during Saturday's walk-through: the building meant far more to the community than bricks and mortar. It was, and remains, a part of Rowan County's story.
