
HITCHINS, Ky. — Firefighters responded to Heritage Elementary School in the Hitchins community of Carter County Friday evening after receiving a report of a possible structure fire.
According to the Hitchins Volunteer Fire Department, crews were dispatched to the school at approximately 7:58 p.m. Friday, September 18.
When firefighters arrived, they found the school gymnasium filled with smoke. Officials said the smoke appeared to have originated from a malfunctioning light in the ceiling of the gym.
Fortunately, the fire had already been isolated and extinguished before firefighters arrived.
Crews checked the affected area and conducted an assessment of the scene. No additional fire was discovered, and the incident was resolved without further problems, according to the department.
The Hitchins Fire Department received mutual aid and assistance from the Grayson Fire Department, Carter County EMS, EM 1 and Carter County E-911.
No injuries were reported in the department's release.
Hitchins is an unincorporated community in Carter County located just south of Grayson.
