ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. — Nearly five decades of dedicated volunteer firefighting, combined with military service during the Vietnam War, have earned a longtime Rowan County firefighter special recognition from the American Legion.
Howard Helterbrand, a veteran member of the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department, has been selected as the American Legion Firefighter of the Year, according to an announcement by American Legion Post 126.
Helterbrand began his volunteer firefighting career in 1979, embarking on what would become 47 years of service to his community. Throughout those years, he has remained an active member of the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department, eventually attaining the rank of captain.
His decades of commitment represent a lifetime devoted to answering calls for help, protecting lives and property, and serving his neighbors.
A Legacy of Service That Began in the Military
Long before beginning his career as a volunteer firefighter, Helterbrand answered another call to service — this time to his country.
From 1965 to 1969, Helterbrand served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.
According to the American Legion, he was assigned to ATC Boat Unit 1329, serving aboard military watercraft operating along the Saigon River and into Cambodia.
His military service placed him in a dangerous combat environment thousands of miles from home, years before he would begin protecting his fellow Rowan Countians as a volunteer firefighter.
Nearly Half a Century of Community Dedication
Volunteer fire departments have long played an essential role in protecting rural Kentucky communities, relying heavily on individuals willing to sacrifice their personal time to respond when emergencies arise.
For Helterbrand, that commitment has spanned generations.
Since joining the Route 377 Volunteer Fire Department in 1979, he has witnessed decades of changes in firefighting equipment, emergency response procedures, and the communities served by local departments.
Through those changes, his dedication has remained constant.
His selection as Firefighter of the Year recognizes not only his years of service but also the remarkable commitment required to remain an active volunteer firefighter for nearly half a century.
American Legion Post 126 publicly congratulated Helterbrand on his selection, recognizing both his military background and his longstanding contributions to the community.
For a man who has spent much of his life serving others, the recognition is a fitting tribute to a legacy of service that began in the United States Navy and continued through 47 years of volunteer firefighting.
The Morehead Minute joins the American Legion in congratulating Howard Helterbrand on this well-deserved recognition and thanking him for his decades of service to our nation and the Rowan County community.
