This morning the Morehead Minute received a response from Rowan County Jailer Wes Coldiron in reference to our inquiry about the recent inmate walk-off / escape.

According to Rowan Mr. Coldiron, accountability measures are being taken following the recent inmate walk-off incident, and disciplinary action will occur where appropriate.

Coldiron confirmed that some of the inmates involved in past walk-offs had been participating in outside work programs without direct supervision at the time they left custody.

He stated that additional safeguards and internal discussions with staff have already taken place in an effort to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future. However, he acknowledged that no system can guarantee such incidents will never happen again.

Coldiron also emphasized the importance of inmate work programs and rehabilitation opportunities, noting that while isolated incidents can create concern, the programs themselves have benefited many individuals and positively impacted lives. He added that completely eliminating the risk would require ending outside inmate work details and related rehabilitation programs altogether.
