MOREHEAD, Ky. — Rowan County school officials have condemned an incident involving racist graffiti directed at a local educator and football coach during Friday night's high school football game, confirming that the matter is under investigation.

Jeff Jones, vice principal at Rowan County Middle School and an assistant football coach at Rowan County Senior High School, reportedly discovered the offensive messages inside a restroom during halftime of the Vikings' October 23 home football game against Greenup County.

According to an account published by EKY Crime Watch, Jones encountered two messages spray-painted on restroom partitions. One contained a racial slur, while the other included a vulgar personal insult identifying him by name.

Despite the discovery, Jones returned to the sidelines to finish coaching the game.

However, the incident prompted him to speak publicly about racism and the effect such behavior can have on those targeted.

Coach Says Incident Was Not His First Experience

In a statement shared Saturday, October 24, Jones described the emotional impact of discovering the messages and expressed disappointment that such behavior continues to occur within the community where he has spent years working with young people.

The longtime educator, who previously played football at Morehead State University, indicated that he has encountered similar treatment during his employment in Rowan County.

Jones explained that he had generally avoided publicly discussing those experiences but believed the latest incident warranted bringing attention to the problem.

One particularly troubling possibility, he suggested, was that the person responsible might be someone he had previously taught or supervised.

Jones did not identify a suspect, and there has been no public confirmation of who painted the messages.

His statement also encouraged parents and other community members to recognize that students and employees from minority backgrounds may experience discrimination that never becomes publicly known.

He emphasized the importance of teaching young people how their words and actions affect others.

School District Condemns Racist Behavior

Rowan County Schools subsequently released a public statement expressing support for Jones and his family while denouncing the graffiti.

"Racism and hateful behavior have no place in Rowan County Schools," the district declared.

School officials acknowledged the distress the incident has caused and emphasized that students, employees, and families should be able to participate in school activities without experiencing harassment or discrimination.

The district also confirmed that the incident is being investigated as suspected hate speech and vandalism, with the Rowan County Sheriff's Department assisting in the ongoing investigation.

The school system pledged to take the matter seriously while reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment throughout its facilities.

Administrators also encouraged the community to consider the example adults set for children through their conduct and treatment of others.

Investigation Continues

As of Sunday, October 25, no individual has been publicly identified as responsible for the graffiti in the information available to The Morehead Minute.

It also remains unclear whether those responsible were students, spectators, or other individuals attending the football game.

The incident has brought renewed attention to the importance of addressing racism and discriminatory behavior within schools and the surrounding community.

For Jones, the situation appears to represent more than an isolated act of vandalism. His public comments reflect a broader concern about the treatment of minority students and employees and the need to confront such conduct rather than dismiss it.

He concluded his statement with a message directed toward the entire community:

"I need us all to do better."

Rowan County Schools has directed anyone seeking additional information about the incident or the ongoing investigation to the Rowan County Sheriff's Department.

The Morehead Minute will provide additional information as it becomes available.
