ROWAN COUNTY, Ky. — Several motorists escaped serious injury Friday night following a three-vehicle crash on Interstate 64 that sent a rental truck across the median and over an embankment.

The accident occurred at approximately 10:30 p.m. Friday, October 16, near mile marker 143 in Rowan County, according to information released by Morehead Fire Department Assistant Chief John Northcutt.

According to Northcutt, a westbound Penske rental truck reportedly lost control and struck a guardrail along the westbound lanes of the interstate.

The truck then traveled across the westbound lanes, broke through the cable median barrier, and crossed into the eastbound side of the interstate.

After striking a guardrail on the eastbound side, the truck continued over an embankment, where it eventually came to rest.

Two passenger vehicles were also involved in the collision, including one traveling eastbound and another traveling westbound.

Despite the potentially dangerous circumstances, Northcutt reported that no one involved in the crash required transportation to a hospital.

The interstate was briefly closed for several minutes while emergency personnel arrived and responded to the scene.

Emergency responders included Rowan County Emergency Medical Services, the Morehead Fire Department, and Kentucky Fish and Wildlife personnel.

The crash remains under investigation by Rowan County Sheriff's Deputy Cam Middleton.

Additional details regarding what caused the truck to lose control or how the two passenger vehicles became involved were not immediately available.

The incident serves as a reminder of how quickly dangerous situations can develop on interstate highways, particularly when vehicles cross median barriers into opposing lanes of traffic.
