When we think about the history of Rowan County, it's easy to focus on the towns and communities that have existed for generations. But every community has a beginning, and behind many of those beginnings is an individual whose contributions have quietly faded into history.

For the Triplett community, one of those individuals was Fielding B. Ham.

Born on March 11, 1830, in neighboring Carter County, Ham lived during a time when eastern Kentucky was still largely frontier country. Roads were primitive, communication was slow, and communities often revolved around a handful of businesses and public services. The men and women willing to establish those services became the backbone of their communities.

Fielding Ham was one of those people.

A Builder of Community

Most people know that Ham served as a postmaster, but his contributions extended far beyond delivering the mail.

Historical records indicate that Ham first served as Postmaster of Pine Springs beginning in November 1876. Just a few years later, on February 24, 1880, he established the Triplett Post Office, an important milestone in the development of eastern Rowan County.

In the nineteenth century, receiving a post office was a significant event for any rural community. It connected local residents with the rest of the nation, allowed businesses to communicate with suppliers and customers, and gave the growing settlement an official identity recognized by the federal government.

In many ways, the establishment of the Triplett Post Office helped place the community "on the map."

More Than the Mail

Ham was never content to wear only one hat.

Records also identify him as a Deputy Clerk of Rowan County, serving his neighbors through local government. He was also a businessman, operating a water-powered grist mill and sawmill alongside fellow family member Dan Ham.

Those mills were essential to everyday life.

Farmers brought corn and wheat to be ground into meal and flour. Local families depended on the sawmill to produce lumber for homes, barns, fences, and businesses. Long before modern hardware stores existed, mills like Ham's served as economic engines for the surrounding countryside.

Pine Springs in Its Prime

During the late 1800s, the Pine Springs and Triplett area was a thriving rural community.

Historical accounts describe a settlement that included churches, a general store, a physician, blacksmith shops, a shingle factory, schools, the Ham mill, and the post office.

Fielding Ham stood at the center of much of that activity.

His work connected residents not only through commerce but through communication and public service.

A Family Man

The 1880 federal census shows Fielding living with his wife, Sabina, and their children, including James L., Sarah E., Caroline, George P., Albert R., and Ulysses.

Like many Appalachian families of the era, the Ham family helped shape Rowan County through hard work, agriculture, public service, and deep roots in the community.

An Enduring Legacy

Fielding B. Ham passed away on May 25, 1912, at the age of 82.

Today, he rests in Masters Cemetery located on the Carter & Rowan County lines, where his weathered monument stands as a quiet reminder of a man whose life's work helped build a community.

Many people drive through Triplett today without ever considering how the community came to be known or who helped establish it. Yet more than 140 years ago, one local citizen helped secure a post office, operated businesses that served his neighbors, worked in county government, and played an important role in the development of eastern Rowan County.

History often remembers governors, generals, and famous politicians.

But communities are built by people like Fielding B. Ham—ordinary citizens who devoted their lives to serving their neighbors.

Although his name may not appear in most history books, his legacy lives on every time someone says the name Triplett, Kentucky.
