MOREHEAD, Ky. — Elliott County native and Morehead State University graduate Rocky Adkins has officially entered the 2027 race for Kentucky governor, launching a campaign centered on lowering costs, strengthening public education and health care, and expanding economic opportunities across the commonwealth.
Adkins, a longtime Democratic leader in Kentucky politics, made the announcement Tuesday after filing the necessary campaign paperwork and formally declaring his candidacy.
For Eastern Kentucky, Adkins' announcement carries a local connection. Raised in neighboring Elliott County, he earned his degree from Morehead State University before beginning a decades-long career in public service.
Adkins was first elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives at age 26, where he went on to become the Democratic leader in the House. In 2019, he joined Gov. Andy Beshear's administration as a senior advisor, a position he held until earlier this month.
In announcing his campaign, Adkins said Kentucky families are facing growing financial pressures and pledged to focus on policies aimed at reducing everyday costs while supporting public schools, health care, workers and economic development.
He also emphasized his experience working across political lines during his years in the General Assembly, saying he believes Kentucky needs practical leadership capable of bringing people together to address the state's challenges.
Adkins said his campaign will seek to "build common ground" and continue what he described as efforts to create a government that serves Kentuckians.
The announcement sets up what is expected to be a closely watched Democratic primary. Lt. Gov. Jacqueline Coleman has already entered the race, meaning Democratic voters will choose between two prominent figures from Gov. Andy Beshear's administration.
For residents of the Morehead area, Adkins' candidacy places another Eastern Kentuckian in the spotlight. As an Elliott County native and Morehead State alumnus, he becomes one of the region's highest-profile candidates to seek Kentucky's highest elected office in recent years.
The 2027 Kentucky gubernatorial primary is scheduled for May 18, 2027.
