MOREHEAD, Ky. — A new overnight getaway has opened in Morehead, offering visitors a private cottage retreat complete with a pond, hiking trails, fishing, a hot tub and space for small gatherings and special events.
Valerie White, wife of Kentucky State Representative Richard White, recently announced the opening of Val’s Retreat, a two-bedroom, two-bath cottage located near Sugarloaf Mountain in Morehead.
Marketed as a place to “Relax, Recharge & Reconnect,” the property is designed for couples, families and small groups looking for a quiet getaway while remaining just minutes from downtown Morehead.
The cottage features two bedrooms with king-size beds and can accommodate up to four overnight guests. It also includes two full bathrooms, a kitchen, dining and living areas, heating and air conditioning, a washer, onsite parking and a two-car carport.
But much of the appeal of Val’s Retreat is found outside the cottage.
Guests have access to a scenic pond with four fishing docks, along with a paddle boat for exploring the water. Visitors are encouraged to bring their fishing equipment, and those wanting additional paddling opportunities can bring a canoe or kayak to explore nearby North Fork or Triplett Creek.
Approximately two miles of trails wind through the property, with five picnic tables situated along the trails and elsewhere on the grounds. Cleared areas in the woods also provide an opportunity for children to pitch a tent and enjoy a camping experience while remaining close to the cottage.
Wildlife sightings may also be part of the experience, with deer and wild turkeys among the animals visitors could encounter while enjoying the property.
After a day outdoors, guests can use a hot tub located beneath a covered porch or spend the evening around a private fire pit. According to the property listing, the host will start the fire and provide firewood for guests.
Val’s Retreat is also branching beyond the traditional vacation-rental model by offering an on-site covered event and entertainment shelter for an additional fee.
The space is being marketed for small family reunions, birthday and anniversary celebrations, intimate weddings and other gatherings. Availability, event details and additional pricing are handled directly through the host.
Despite its secluded atmosphere, the retreat is conveniently located. The listing describes the property as approximately one mile from Walmart and four miles from downtown Morehead, while also placing visitors within easy driving distance of Morehead State University and other local destinations.
For Morehead and Rowan County, the opening adds another locally operated lodging option at a time when visitors come to the area for Morehead State University events, outdoor recreation, family visits and regional tourism.
Val’s Retreat is currently listed on VRBO as “Relax & Recharge in this 2BR/2BA Cottage Retreat located in Morehead, KY.” The newly opened property does not yet have guest reviews listed on the platform.
In announcing the venture, Val’s Retreat summed up its goal simply: providing visitors with a place to slow down, enjoy the outdoors and reconnect.
“Whether you're looking for outdoor adventure or a quiet place to recharge, Val’s Retreat offers the perfect escape from the everyday.”
