Recent black bear sightings in both Montgomery and Bath counties serve as a reminder that Kentucky's bear population continues to expand beyond its traditional mountain habitat.
Wildlife officials stress that black bears are generally shy animals and rarely pose a threat to people. However, if you encounter one, there are a few important steps to remember:
• Stay calm and do not run. Running can trigger a bear's instinct to chase.
• Keep your distance and never approach the animal for photos or a closer look.
• Back away slowly while facing the bear.
• Make yourself appear larger by standing tall and speaking in a firm voice.
• Never feed a bear. Feeding bears can make them lose their natural fear of people.
• Secure garbage, pet food, bird feeders, and other food sources around your home if bears have been reported in your area.
According to the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, black bears naturally avoid people and negative encounters are extremely rare. Residents are encouraged to give bears plenty of space and allow them to move through the area on their own.
If a bear appears aggressive or poses an immediate danger, contact local law enforcement immediately.
