A Rowan County World War II veteran has been recognized with a lasting tribute to his service and sacrifice.
State Representative Richard White recently joined the family of William Argus "Bill" Johnson for the dedication of a portion of Kentucky Route 32 as the William Argus "Bill" Johnson Memorial Highway. The designation was approved by the Kentucky General Assembly through House Joint Resolution 41.
According to Representative White, Johnson served with the 940th Field Artillery Battalion during World War II. He and his fellow soldiers played a role in the liberation of several European towns and villages and were among the first American troops encountered by grateful civilians as Allied forces pushed across Europe.
Following the war, Johnson returned home after receiving an honorable discharge. Rather than seeking recognition for his military service, he became known for serving his own community, lending a helping hand to neighbors and remaining active in local life.
Representative White described it as an honor to join Johnson's family for the dedication ceremony and thanked his fellow members of the Kentucky House of Representatives for passing the resolution that made the memorial highway possible.
The newly designated stretch of KY 32 will serve as a permanent reminder of Johnson's military service overseas and his commitment to Rowan County after returning home.
